Having completed with Distinction a GNVA Advanced study in Media, and gaining a 2:1 in a BA Honours Journalism Degree, complete with award for outstanding achievement, I began my working career as Features Editor on the In Car Entertainment trade publication Car Audio Retailer (C.A.R) in 2005.

After just four months, I was promoted to the role of Editor and took over the running of the editorial content of the magazine, including the commissioning of articles, reviews, and freelancers. During my time, we established a regular column / step-by-step of fitting devices into certain cars, written by industry experts, and pushed the magazine forward. C.A.R also held its own annual awards ceremony, the ICE Awards, of which I was a member of the judging panel.

After two years, I decided that the magazine had gone as far as it could under my stewardship, and felt that it was time to move on in order to progress my career. I moved into PR at online recruitment specialists JobServe. I handled the press relations and advertising for a number of their job exhibitions across the country, revamped their press releases and worked with local media to ensure the shows were covered.

However four months on, it was decided that the entire marketing department would be shut, and I was surplus to requirement. For the following six months, I began freelancing, writing for Scotland’s Fast and Modified magazine, as well as helping to set up a new car audio trade magazine ICE Monthly, in the role of Freelance Editor. This included travelling around with the publisher to accrue advertising and set out our beliefs for the future, not just of the magazine, but the car audio market as a whole.

In December 2007, my CV was picked up at Practical Motorhome magazine, and I started in a full time basis as their Technical Writer the following month. Working for the publishing company Haymarket, I was given further training and information on the latest systems that had come into the media world since my degree, most notably Adobe InDesign.

My role at Practical Motorhome meant I was often delving into the technical depths of motor caravans, exploring electronics, gas systems, weights and payloads and fixtures and fittings, as well as writing about what goes on beneath the bonnet and the mechanical side of the vehicles. I was also asked to write travel features, four of which were the main cover articles. I sourced photographs, led photographers on shoots, researched different aspects of articles, interviewed members of the motorhome fraternity and represented the magazine at many shows, product and motorhome launches both in the UK and on the continent.

In my free time I also established a car enthusiasts club and website, Car-Nation.net, attended photograph courses, and offer help and advice to those looking to enter the world of media. Writing for the web, or for magazine, nothing is daunting, and I will always enjoy a challenge!
